International airport Baikal (Ulan-Ude) is a well-developed air traffic center situated in a city of Ulan-Ude, a capital of Buryatia Republic. The airport is located on traditional international routes, which connects Europe and countries of Asian-Pacific region. The airport provides air communication between Ulan-Ude (capital of the Republic of Buryatia) and other regions of the Russian Federation.

The airport has been operating since 1926 and has an excellent statistics on flight safety. Lake Baikal Airport possesses all technical opportunities to serve Russian and international aircrafts: runway length 3000 m, lighting system (High Intensity Lights – I), all necessary infrastructure, air-navigation and meteorological equipment, large passenger terminal, trained staff, certificate of conformance on airport activity No. A. 01123 of March, 28, 2008, issued by the Federal Aviation Agency.

After the reconstruction of the runway in 2006-2007, the airport is able to serve any types of aircrafts without restrictions on take-off weight. New lights equipment, installed in 2007, allows to accept aircrafts at night time on request of air companies and in future to operate 24 hours. Airport Ulan-Ude is permitted to accept following types of aircrafts on a regular base: А – 319/320/321, В- 737/757,  Тu – 204,  Тu – 214, Тu – 154, IL – 76, АN -12, YaК – 42, АТR – 42/72,  SААB – 340, AN-124, IL-96 and other types. Due to advantages of weather conditions airport Ulan-Ude is used as a reserve for airports Irkutsk and Chita. Within intergovernmental agreements airport Baikal serves aircrafts of the USA and other NATO countries under the treaty on liquidation ballistic missiles and program “Open Sky”.

Thanks to its advantageous location, airport Baikal is the best place for technical landing, top-up and land service of freight aircrafts of Asian – Pacific countries. Proximity to Lake Baikal and creation of special economic zone of tourist recreation type provide great possibilities for significant increase of tourist passenger traffic through the international airport Ulan-Ude and its further development.

Today, international airport Baikal experiences increase of regular and chartered flights. Moreover, the airport continually expands a geography of flights, including international routes. Airport Baikal is determined to become an international hub point for increasing cargo traffic between Russia and Asian region.
